Luka Doncic’s first matchup against the Dallas Mavericks since his unexpected trade to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package centered around Anthony Davis has sparked plenty of discussion. Before stepping onto the court for this highly anticipated game, Kyrie Irving is taking a moment to pay tribute to LA icon Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gigi Bryant.
When he arrived at Crypto.com Arena, the nine-time All-Star guard took a moment to visit the statue honoring both Kobe and Gigi Bryant. The Lakers unveiled the tribute last summer to honor the entire Bryant family. Irving, who saw the five-time NBA champion as a mentor, continues to carry his wisdom with him.
Kyrie Irving focuses on what truly matters in life before Lakers game
Kobe and Gigi Bryant were among nine lives lost in a tragic helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. Their families, along with the city of Los Angeles, continue to mourn the heartbreaking loss. Many have honored Kobe’s legacy through murals and sneaker tributes, keeping his impact alive. Irving’s pregame gesture is yet another reminder of how the Black Mamba’s influence endures.
The 2016 champion and his Mavericks teammates arrive in Los Angeles with plenty of emotions, having reached the NBA Finals with Doncic just last year. However, Irving is keeping things in perspective. While the blockbuster trade on February 2 made headlines, it pales in comparison to the shock and sorrow felt worldwide after the tragic helicopter accident.
Irving has been a polarizing figure for various reasons, but he often reflects deeply on life beyond basketball. As the Mavericks prepare to face the Lakers on Tuesday night, his thoughts remain with Kobe and Gigi Bryant. Tip-off is set for 10 p.m. ET.
