The NFL and NFLPA have set a salary cap of $279.2 million per club for the 2025 season, according to sources. This represents the highest salary cap in league history, reflecting an increase of nearly $24 million from the $255.4 million cap for the 2024 season. Additionally, it is almost $100 million higher than the cap for the 2021 season.

The salary cap in the NFL may see further growth, particularly as the league explores the possibility of an 18-game schedule. Additionally, the expansion of games to international markets contributes to increasing revenue, as highlighted by a recent report.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed his belief that the league could eventually establish a full-time franchise in an international city. He suggested that this could lead to the hosting of an international Super Bowl in the future. Goodell has also indicated that the league plans to introduce more games abroad, further enhancing its global presence.
“We aim to reach our goal swiftly,” Goodell stated regarding the plan to increase the number of international games to eight. “If we adjust our regular season to include an 18-game schedule along with two preseason games, I envision us hosting 16 of those games in international markets.”
With more games, more countries, and increased revenue, the league is certainly on a roll lately.
The announcement of a higher salary cap will have varying effects on individual teams. For instance, the reigning champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, will benefit from having more funds available. With 18 pending free agents, this increase could help them retain key players like Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham.
Currently, the Eagles have over $18 million in cap space, but that figure could rise with strategic roster adjustments and contract voiding. While a larger salary cap benefits all teams, it particularly aids those with limited cap space by significantly enhancing their purchasing power. For example, the New England Patriots already had over $100 million available for free agency, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ranked 23rd in cap space. This change narrows the gap between teams like the Buccaneers and the Patriots in the pursuit of free agents.
