As Giancarlo Stanton’s availability for Opening Day remains uncertain for the New York Yankees, attention is shifting to Ben Rice, who could capitalize on designated hitter opportunities while also providing versatility as a catcher and first baseman. This offseason, Rice focused on his physique, gaining around 10 pounds to enhance his power, as reported by Greg Joyce of the New York Post.
“I think the ball’s coming off the bat harder, for sure,” Ben Rice said, via Joyce. “Putting more mass on the ball, so it’s going to come off harder.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his enthusiasm for Ben Rice’s future, highlighting the significant progress he has made this winter, particularly in his physical development and catching skills.
“I’m excited about Ben,” Boone said, according to Greg Joyce. “I think he’s going to be a really good hitter in the league. He’s made huge strides in his body this winter. He’s added really good weight and strength, and it shows up in his testing. I think he has the potential to be an impact hitter. He continues to impress us with his work behind the plate. He could contribute in various ways. If Giancarlo (Stanton) is unavailable at the start of the season, Rice could factor into the DH and first base mix. I do believe he’ll play a role at some point, whether it’s to start the season with us or not. I’m excited about what I’ve seen in his continued physical growth.”
Last season, Ben Rice was listed at 215 pounds, but he is now up to 228 pounds in spring training. Historically, Rice often lost weight during the season, but he successfully maintained his weight during his time in the major leagues in 2024, according to Greg Joyce.
In the second half of last season, Rice primarily played first base out of necessity for the Yankees. However, he has returned to focusing more on catching this season, which could create a role for him on the team following the trade of Jose Trevino.
“It’s wherever I can get in the lineup,” Rice said. “If it’s catching, I’m all for it. If it’s at first base, I’m all for it.”
It will be interesting to see Rice’s role on this year’s team, and how Stanton’s injury plays into things.
